What Cannot Go in the Dumpster
Certain materials cannot be placed in roll-off dumpsters due to state and federal regulations. If you're unsure, call us at (417) 241-2996 before loading.
Why does this matter?
Hazardous materials in landfills can contaminate groundwater and soil. Disposal of prohibited materials in a roll-off dumpster is also illegal and can result in fines. We inspect loads and reserve the right to refuse or charge additional fees for prohibited materials found at pickup.
Hazardous Chemicals & Fluids
- Motor oil and automotive fluids
- Gasoline, diesel, and fuel
- Antifreeze and coolant
- Pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers
- Pool chemicals and chlorine
- Solvents, acetone, and paint thinner
- Cleaning chemicals and bleach
- Propane tanks (even empty)
- Acids and corrosive chemicals
Paint & Coatings
- Liquid paint (latex or oil-based)
- Spray paint cans
- Stains, varnishes, and lacquers
- Primers and caulking (in liquid form)
Dry/hardened latex paint is generally okay. Completely dried-out paint cans may be acceptable — call to confirm.
Tires & Automotive
- Car and truck tires
- Heavy equipment tires
- Lead-acid batteries (car batteries)
- Lithium-ion batteries (power tools, EVs)
Local tire retailers and auto shops may accept used tires. Auto parts stores often accept old batteries.
Medical & Biological Waste
- Medical waste and sharps (needles, syringes)
- Blood, bodily fluids, and biological material
- Pharmaceutical waste and medications
- Asbestos (any form — requires licensed abatement)
Electronics with Hazardous Components
- Fluorescent light bulbs and tubes
- CRT monitors and televisions (older models)
- Mercury-containing thermostats or switches
- Smoke detectors (those containing americium)
Standard LED and incandescent bulbs are usually okay. Flat-panel TVs/monitors may be acceptable — call first.
Refrigerants & Sealed Systems
- Refrigerators and freezers (unless freon is professionally removed)
- Air conditioning units (unless freon is professionally removed)
- Dehumidifiers with refrigerant
- Sealed compressors
Appliances from which a certified technician has removed all refrigerants CAN go in the dumpster. We can advise.
Regulated Waste
- Railroad ties treated with creosote (call first)
- PCB-containing electrical equipment (old transformers)
- Septic waste and sewage
- Radioactive material of any kind
Alternatives for Prohibited Materials
- Hazardous household waste: Contact your county health department or check for local HHW collection events.
- Paint: Many hardware stores (Sherwin-Williams, Ace) accept old paint for recycling.
- Tires: Tire shops, auto dealers, and retailers often accept used tires for a small fee.
- Batteries: Auto parts stores (AutoZone, O'Reilly) accept car batteries. Electronics stores accept rechargeable batteries.
- Electronics: Best Buy, Staples, and similar stores offer electronics recycling.
- Medications: Many pharmacies accept unused medications for safe disposal.
